Why are the driver license/ID card numbers changing?
Florida Statute 322.14 (1)(a) requires that the number assigned to Florida driver licenses and ID cards includes at least four randomly generated digits. Beginning August 1st, 2024, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) implemented this legislation, aiming to improve security and safeguard individuals' identities.
When will my driver license/ID card number change?
As of August 1st, 2024, all customers being issued an original driver license or ID card will be assigned a number complying with Florida Statute 322.14 (1)(a).
Customers currently holding a Florida driver license or ID card will be assigned a new number when they are issued a renewal or replacement credential. This includes, but is not limited to, changing your address, replacing a lost credential, upgrading from a learner license to a driver license, etc.
Do I need to come in to get a new driver license/ID card?
No, you are not required to come in solely to get an updated number. You can wait until you need to complete another transaction. This includes, but is not limited to, renewing, changing your address, replacing a lost credential, upgrading from a learner license to a driver license, etc.
Will my number change each time I get a driver license or ID card?
No. Once you have been issued a driver license or ID card after August 1st, 2024, your number will not change again - unless you need to change your name. Refer to our Name Change publication for additional information.
Can I renew/replace online to avoid changing my driver license/ID card number?
Although most renewal and replacement transactions can be processed online, if your number has not been updated since August 1st, 2024, you will be assigned a new number during your online transaction.
