If you have physical impairments and utilize adaptive equipment while operating a motor vehicle, you are required to have restrictions placed on your driver license record. In addition, if you have impairments that affect your coordination, range of motion and/or strength of motion, our office may authorize additional restrictions.
1. Restriction Information
The following is a list of restrictions that may be applied based on individual needs:
| Restriction Code | Description |
| 3 | Medical Alert Bracelet (customer’s option; not required) |
| 4 | No Manual Transmission |
| 5 | Power Steering |
| 6 | Directional Signals |
| 7 | Grip on Steering Wheel (spinner knobs) |
| 8 | Left-foot Accelerator |
| C | Mechanical Aid |
| D | Prosthetic Aid |
| I | Limited Other Restriction |
These restrictions may be added/removed for various reasons. The most common are as follows:
- If during the Driving Skills Road Test to get a first-time Class E license, your vehicle is outfitted with special equipment for driving, any applicable restrictions will be added when your license is issued.
- If you lose an extremity (arm or leg) and can still safely operate a vehicle, certain restrictions will be added.
- If your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle is questionable, you may need to be referred to the Medical Review Board. Based on their findings, testing may need to be administered and/or certain restrictions may need to be added. We offer medical related testing by appointment only for Manatee County Residents.
2. Additional Information
If you no longer have a need to operate a vehicle with adaptive equipment and would like to have the restriction(s) removed, you would be required to demonstrate your ability to drive without using adaptive equipment. To effectively demonstrate this, you will be required to take the standard Class E Driving Skills Road Test and the results will be determined by the Driver License examiner administering the test.
If your driving record already indicates that you have undergone review and/or testing and the necessary restrictions have been added, barring any new evidence to the contrary, no further action may be required.
An Online Application is REQUIRED for all transactions!
