Refer to the applicable section below for more information and instructions for removing the following registration stop(s).
Repossession Recovery Attempt Stop
A registration stop is currently on file for failure to surrender the vehicle under a repossession order. This type of stop prevents a registration renewal or replacement for the vehicle in question until it is surrendered to the lienholder and the stop is removed per Florida Statutes.
To have the stop removed or if you have questions, you must contact your lienholder. If your lienholder agrees to remove the stop, they must complete and sign form HSMV 82191 (Notice or Discharge of Repossession Recovery Attempt) and mail it to the DHSMV in Tallahassee at the address listed on the top of the form. The Tax Collector's Office cannot remove these stops.
Unpaid Fees Stop (Failure to Pay Dealer for Registration)
A registration stop is currently on file because you failed to pay the dealership for title and/or registration fees. This type of stop prevents a registration renewal or replacement for the vehicle you purchased from the dealership. Once the fees are paid to the dealership, the stop can be removed per Florida Statutes.
1. To have the stop removed or if you have questions, you must contact the dealership where you purchased your vehicle. If the dealership agrees to remove the stop, they must provide you with an official letter on the dealership's letterhead that includes:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- License Plate #
- Registered owner's name(s)
- Registered owner's driver license number(s)
- Amount paid
- Authorized agent's signature for the dealership
The original letter must be submitted in person at one of our offices.
Note: If the dealership is out of business, you must contact the DMV Regional Office at 323 10th Avenue West, Suite #200, Palmetto, FL 34221 or 941.723.455 for assistance.
2. If you wish to dispute the registration stop, you may submit a completed form HSMV 82078 (flhsmv.gov/pdf/forms/82078.pdf), Notification of Dispute of Registration Fees Paid to a Dealer for a Motor Vehicle, along with documented proof that the fees have been paid to the dealer for the disputed amount.
The completed form and the documented proof that the disputed amount of fees has been paid must be mailed to the DHSMV in Tallahassee at the address listed on the top of the form. The DHSMV will review the completed form and if it is in order, they will remove the stop.
